Macafem’s herb, officially known as Lepidium meyenii, is a tuber with thick starchy roots that may be yellow, purple, or black. This plant has been cultivated for over 2,000 years in the Andes Mountains of the Junín Department in Peru, at 12,000 to 14,500 feet above sea level.

The volcanically enriched soils, unpolluted atmosphere, and extremely cold and oxygen-poor climate are some of the main reasons for the extraordinary properties of this herb.

Macafem Cultivation Grounds

The grounds where Macafem’s special selection is cultivated are located in the Andes Mountains of the Junín Department of Peru. The plants are sown at the beginning of the rainy season, which lasts from September to November. Harvesting begins in May or June with growth of the crop usually extending within a period of eight to nine months.

Average temperatures in this part of Junín can get as low as 14°F (-10°C) but rarely ever go above 55°F (13°C). Because of the altitude, there are also sharp fluctuations in temperature between night and day.

This herb has a great ability to extract nutrients from the surrounding soil in such a way that it sterilizes the ground. This is one of the main reasons why it becomes so rich in nutrients that provide support to the hormonal system in a natural way. Some three to five metric tons per hectare of organic matter must be added to enable the plant to be sown for a second consecutive year. Otherwise, the land must be left fallow for at least eight years to allow it to recover.
