Tips to Boost Fertility

Learn your cycle

The menstrual cycle is guided by hormones. Estrogen dominates the first half in order to mature follicles containing eggs, while progesterone takes charge during the second half of the cycle to support the lining of the endometrium in preparation for conception.

Throughout the whole menstrual cycle, women are only able to get pregnant during the fertile window. The fertile window starts up to five days before ovulation and includes the day of ovulation as well. Remember that ovulation falls about two weeks before the date of your expected period.

Track ovulation patterns

Several methods are used to track ovulatory patterns in order to time fertile windows with intercourse successfully. They include charting your basal body temperature (BBT) for a slight spike before ovulation; assessing cervical mucus for egg white consistency; checking cervical position for when it is soft, high, and open; as well as using an ovulation calendar, tracker, or monitor for increased success.

Have frequent sex

If you have to choose to separate times from your month for planned intercourse, do so around the time of ovulation. However, experts agree that it is less stressful and more productive to have unprotected sex at least every two to three days throughout the cycle. This ensures that couples have a higher chance of hitting the short fertility window each month.

Consume a fertility diet

Women who are trying to maximize their fertility should compose meal plans around the three macronutrients: healthy fats, complex carbs, and lean protein. By doing do, they are nourishing their bodies with essential nutrients needed for menstrual health.

Also, studies have found that switching from animal to plant-based protein sources decreases the risk of ovulatory infertility. The same goes for full-fat dairy in place of low-fat dairy.

Manage underlying health conditions

Because obesity, thyroid disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and other underlying health conditions disrupt hormonal balance and throw off healthy ovulatory patterns, they should be properly managed before getting pregnant. This would also be a good time to resolve emotional problems and stress as the overall path into parenthood can take a toll on some women’s emotional health.
