Macafem and Perimenopause: All about the Symptoms

All women go through the menopause transition, a natural part of life in which the menstrual cycle stops permanently. However, this transition does not happen overnight. Perimenopause refers to the time leading up to menopause, or the day when a woman has gone one full year without having a period. Perimenopause can last 2 – 10 years, and it is the main time when women experience “menopause symptoms.” One of the principal benefits of Macafem is alleviating these symptoms.

When Does Perimenopause Happen?

In the U.S., the average age at which women complete the menopause transition is 51 years old. This is by no means a hard-and-fast rule, though, especially given the highly variable length of perimenopause. Most women enter perimenopause in their forties or early fifties. It is also possible for women to enter perimenopause and experience the symptoms before age 40. When this happens, it is often referred to as early menopause, as it happens sooner than the average age.

Perimenopause Symptoms

During perimenopause, the body is preparing to stop menstruation altogether. The body’s levels of the hormones estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone fluctuate erratically as a result. Because these hormones regulate so many processes in the body – not just reproductive functions – perimenopause symptoms may appear. The most commonly-reported symptoms are:

  • Irregular periods.
Perimenopausal women typically experience deviations from their normal menstrual cycle. In many cases, flow is heavier with more time between each period, but cycles can also get shorter. Keeping a period diary can help women identify if they are in the midst of perimenopause.
  • Hot flashes.
The hallmark of menopause symptoms is the hot flash. These episodes of heat, redness, and sweating affect the majority of perimenopausal women. When hot flashes happen during sleep, they are referred to as night sweats.
  • Mood swings.
Changes in hormone levels can impact mood regulation. Women may feel sudden shifts in emotion that are due to hormone levels rather than external triggers.
  • Hair loss.
Sex hormones also play a role in regulating hair growth. In perimenopause, many women experience hair thinning or loss.
  • Vaginal dryness.
A shortage of estrogen during perimenopause can lead to less flexibility and moisture in the vaginal walls. This can result in pain during sex and a reduction in libido.

The above are just the most common symptoms of perimenopause. Other symptoms that women may experience due to perimenopausal hormone imbalance include:

  • Weight gain
  • Memory lapses
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep problems
  • Bloating
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Depression
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Breast pain
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Trouble focusing
